Top 10 Tips on Entering Business Awards

  • Tell your story. Judges love to hear how you started your business, your journey and how you made it a success.
  • Do your homework. If the judges have gone to the bother of listing their judging criteria then make sure your submission addresses each criterion.
  • Stick to the word/time limit. If a maximum word count/time limit has been specified then stick to it. Remember the judges have only a set about time to read/listen to your submission so be respectful of their time.
  • Numbers, numbers, numbers. Judges love numbers. Quantify as much as you can – turnover, profit, staff increase, productivity improvement, time savings, absolutely everything you can.
  • Self praise is no praise, so if possible include testimonials from happy customers or quotes from contented staff members.
  • Make it easy for the judges to read/listen to. You might be their 20th submission of the day so be kind to them!
  • Don’t enter a category that you are not eligible for! Read the guidelines and make sure you are the right age, size etc. for the category.
  • Don’t shy away from letting the judges know about some, but not all, of the challenges you faced and how you overcame them.
  • Get feedback (unless the rules state that no feedback will be given) and learn from your mistakes.
  • Don’t be a sore loser, even though it hurts!
